MEET PATRICIA MOTA

I am deeply committed to advancing the mission and vision of our esteemed university, and I am eager to contribute my skills, experience, and passion to serve as a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University. My journey with Indiana University (IU) has been transformative, starting with my double degree in Spanish and Communication & Culture from the College of Arts & Sciences, followed by a master’s in public administration at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). These academic pursuits laid the foundation for a career driven by a commitment to education, equity, and community engagement.

While my degrees provided the knowledge base for my career, it was my active involvement on campus that truly shaped my leadership skills. From co-founding the Alpha Eta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon to co-founding the IU Latin Dance Club, my campus engagements instilled in me a sense of responsibility and leadership. I served as a Resident Assistant for various dorms and programs such as for Groups, launched cardio hip-hop and Latin dance group exercise classes at the Student Recreational Sports Center, and collaborated with various entities, such as the IU Advocates for Community Engagement, to establish El Centro Comunal Latino, a nonprofit addressing community needs. I also proctored exams for students with diverse learning abilities, and worked at the Friends of Art bookstore, actively demonstrating my commitment to enhancing student life and promoting wellness.

Even after graduating, my connection with IU remained steadfast. As an active donor and member of the IU Latino Alumni Association, I have continuously supported initiatives aimed at fostering alumni engagement and advancing diversity initiatives within the university. I returned on several occasions to speak with students from the O’Neill School/SPEA and the Luis Davila Latinx Thematic community. Additionally, my involvement in the O’Neill School/SPEA Distinguished Alumni Council has allowed me to stay connected with the academic community and contribute to the school's strategic objectives. Most recently, my dedication to IU was recognized when I was honored as the IU Latino Distinguished Alumni Awardee in 2023 and the Herman B Wells Greek Legacy Award in 2024.

My dedication to promoting access and equity in education stems from my personal experiences with educational disparities. As a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that many students face in accessing quality education and opportunities for advancement. This commitment has driven my career trajectory, from advising students at Ivy Tech Community College to leading national programs at the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE). As the President & CEO of HACE, I've had the privilege of overseeing board governance, driving significant growth in budget, expanding membership and partnerships, while also advocating for the advancement of underrepresented communities in the workforce.

Furthermore, I co-founded SHENIX, a Financial Technology (Fintech) company aimed at addressing the wealth gap by providing financial education and resources to underserved communities. Through these initiatives, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to creating pathways for economic empowerment and social mobility.

In addition to my professional endeavors, I have been deeply involved in community service, serving on various nonprofit boards and committees; Northeastern Illinois Foundation Board of Trustee, digital undivided Board Chair, IU O’Neill School of Public Affairs Distinguished Alumni Council Member, Chicago Theological Seminary Board of Trustee, Illinois Treasurer Charitable Trust Board Committee Member, for example. My dedication to civic engagement has been recognized through awards such as being named one of Chicago’s Most Powerful Latinos by Crain’s Chicago Business, Aspen Institute Festival of Ideas Scholar, being selected as a 2019 Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow, Nonprofit HR 2020 Women to Watch, among others.

As a nominee for the Board of Trustees of Indiana University, I am inspired by the opportunity to contribute to the university's continued growth and success. I firmly believe that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are foundational principles that must guide our decision-making processes. If selected, I will bring a unique perspective shaped by my diverse background and experiences, ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and valued.

In collaboration with my fellow trustees, I am committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability. I recognize the importance of making informed decisions that prioritize the well-being and success of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. By leveraging my leadership experience, strategic vision, and dedication to serving others, I am confident that I can make meaningful contributions to the Board of Trustees and help shape a brighter future for Indiana University.

Thank you for considering my candidacy for this esteemed position. I am honored by the opportunity to serve as a trustee and contribute to the advancement of our beloved institution. I look forward to working alongside you to uphold the values and legacy of Indiana University.
